5/13/2023 0 Comments Dune messiah sparknotes![]() ![]() ![]() After being published in two parts by a magazine and then being rejected by over 20 book publishers, Dune was finally published in 1965, and Dune Messiah in 1969. He published several subsequent stories after this and began working on the Dune series in 1959. In 1952, Herbert’s first science fiction story, “Looking for Something,” was published in the magazine Startling Stories. Herbert and Stuart married in 1946 and moved to Santa Rosa, California where they had two sons, Brian Patrick and Bruce Calvin. After he and his first wife divorced, Herbert attended the University of Washington where he took creative writing classes and met Beverly Ann Stuart. During this time, Herbert married and had a daughter, Penelope. He served the Navy briefly as a photographer until a head injury caused him to be discharged. After graduating from Salem High School, Herbert worked for various newspapers, lying about his age to get hired. Herbert’s parents experienced poverty after the Great Depression and sent Herbert to live with an aunt and uncle in Salem, Oregon when he was 18. Apart from being an avid reader, Herbert showed an early interest in photography, and he invested in modern cameras throughout his teenage years. Frank Herbert was born in rural Washington and spent his youth exploring the Olympic peninsula. ![]() ![]() Jonathan Scott Lee, co-editor of 'I Am Because We Are: Readings in Africana Philosophy Michael Sawyer helps us hear the depth, strength, and continuing relevance of Malcolm's call for a world-wide Black revolution' 'Black Minded makes a compelling case for Malcolm X as a political philosopher of the first rank. Survivor's platforming resembles Ratchet and Clank as much as its combat resembles Dark Souls. Some are merely cosmetic, which can be disappointing when you're hoping to scour resources for upgrades instead. ![]() It keeps you moving through the world, but you'll still want to keep an eye out for treasures scattered throughout the planets. I often found my enemies dying before their stagger meters filled up.Īlthough the game incorporates some RPG elements, there aren't too many items and currencies to keep track of, which I appreciated. In my playthrough, I went for a more aggressive build, increasing my health to the max but taking less defensive talents, like those that improve parrying and blocking, to focus on ramping up the speed and range of my attacks. Some adversaries telegraph attacks that can be easily parried, but many foes have unique attack patterns, which can be sussed out early in battle by BD-1. There's so many combat options in this game, and I'm not sure if I mastered any of them yet. Survivor gives you numerous ways to best its many fearsome foes and bosses. ![]() ![]() ![]()
5/12/2023 0 Comments Shades of Gray by Jackie Kessler![]() It's basically a setting with an origin like Wildcards but has a very idealistic and Silver Age morality (superheroes primarily rescue people and fight disasters and do charity work than fight villain) instead of Martin's grimdark. They follow Hope as she discovers she has the power of Superman and deciding what to do with that. There's also Wearing the Cape which is widely viewed as the best superhero novels out there. They're pretty close to being the Dresden Files of superhero novels. They're independent books but really popular for a very good reason: Jim Bernheimer is funny as hell in his writing. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Confessions of a D-List Supervillain novels (Confessions, Origins, and Secrets) are great as they follow Cal Stringel as he goes from being an Expy of the Beetle to becoming a superhero. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Smedley butler katz![]() Butler was, at the time of his death, the most decorated Marine in U.S. That man, standing lonely astride the lens-shaped center of a peculiar Venn diagram, has the unlikely name of Smedley Darlington Butler. Major General Smedley Darlington Butler (J June 21, 1940), nicknamed 'Old Gimlet Eye', was a senior United States Marine Corps officer who fought in both the Mexican Revolution and World War I. Among those, there is probably only a single person who will be discovered almost exclusively by two generally nonoverlapping groups: avid readers of the corpus of Noam Chomsky, and members of the Marine Corps. They are most likely to be encountered, if they are encountered at all, in the institutions that often engage the attention of young people between the ages of 18 and 22. ![]() But there is also a group of people who have not passed into national legend, and perhaps whose lives are not considered fit to explain to children. ![]() There are some figures whose place in the story of the American past is so central that schoolchildren cannot help but know them: George Washington, or Abraham Lincoln, or Rosa Parks. Katz’s new book, Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America’s Empire, is an explosive deep dive into the forgotten history of American military imperialism in the early twentieth century. ![]() I have a review in the January/February issue of The New Republic of Jonathan Katz’s biography/travelogue of Smedley Butler, a figure of long fascination to many and totally obscure to others. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

This is the point at which real life creator and semi-fictional creation part ways. “Having been warned not to be too rampant on the subject of slavery, as secesh principles flourished even under the respectable nose of Father Abraham, I had endeavored to walk discreetly.” Well, perhaps not quite as forthright the proximity of Washington D.C.-where the hospital was located-to the borderline of Confederacy was not exactly Alcott’s Massachusetts and so Miss Periwinkle admits: ![]() Like her creator (and real-life doppelganger) Louisa May Alcott, Tribulation Periwinkle is forthright and uncompromising in her attitude not only towards slavery, but also against racial prejudice in general.
